This hat is worked with a variegated background and solid trees (two solid colors can be used). The tree trunks are worked in the rib band and placed on holders, then the trees are picked up and knit separately. After the background is worked (but before the crown shaping), the trees are sewn to the cap. Then the moon is duplicate stitched and the crown shaping is completed.
